Goolancer - Freelance Platform for Indonesian College Students

Project Objectives

Freelancing has become increasingly popular among students in Indonesia as it provides flexibility, practical experience, and opportunities to earn additional income. Many students are interested in taking freelance projects, especially in fields such as graphic design, writing, web development, and content creation. However, accessing freelance opportunities often requires navigating platforms that may not be tailored to beginner freelancers or student lifestyles.

Goolancer was conceptualized as a freelance platform designed specifically for students and young freelancers in Indonesia. The platform aims to connect clients with talented students while providing a structured environment that supports skill development, early professional experience, and manageable work opportunities alongside academic commitments.

In this project, the design process followed a Design Thinking approach to better understand user needs and translate those insights into an intuitive and practical digital experience. The goal was to explore how a platform could simplify the process of finding freelance work while helping students build credibility and manage their time effectively.

Project Objectives

The main objective of this project was to design a digital platform that supports students who want to explore freelance work while still managing their academic responsibilities.

Several key design goals were identified during the early stages of the project. First, the platform needed to make freelance opportunities more accessible to beginner freelancers who may not yet have strong portfolios or professional experience. Second, the system needed to help students manage freelance tasks without interfering with their study schedules.

Another objective was to create an environment where young freelancers could gradually build credibility through completed projects, reviews, and portfolio development. By supporting these goals, Goolancer aims to provide a practical entry point into the freelance economy for students.

Understanding the Users

The primary users of Goolancer are university students and high school graduates who are interested in gaining practical work experience through freelance projects. Many of these users are in the early stages of their professional journey and may not yet have established portfolios or industry networks.

Initial research was conducted through informal surveys and discussions with students who had previously attempted freelance work. From these conversations, several common behaviors and challenges emerged. Students often rely on social media or general freelance platforms to search for projects, but many find it difficult to compete with experienced freelancers.

Another key insight was related to time management. Students frequently struggle to balance academic responsibilities with freelance commitments. As a result, they prefer projects that are flexible, manageable, and clearly defined in scope.

These insights highlighted the importance of designing a platform that not only connects users with opportunities but also supports them in managing work more effectively.

Defining the Problem

Based on the research findings, several recurring pain points were identified among student freelancers.

Many students struggle to find freelance opportunities that match their skills and availability. Existing platforms often prioritize experienced freelancers, making it difficult for beginners to secure their first projects. Additionally, students often lack guidance when it comes to determining appropriate pricing for their services.

Another challenge relates to balancing freelance work with academic schedules. Without clear tools to manage deadlines and tasks, students risk overcommitting to projects or missing important academic responsibilities.

Ideation & Solution Exploration

During the ideation phase, multiple design concepts were explored to address the key challenges identified during research. The goal was to create a platform experience that supports beginner freelancers while maintaining a simple and intuitive workflow.

One of the core ideas was a job matching system that recommends freelance projects based on a user's skills, interests, and availability. This approach helps students discover opportunities that are more relevant to their abilities, reducing the difficulty of searching through large numbers of listings.

Another key concept was the creation of a professional profile system where users can showcase their portfolio, completed projects, and client feedback. For beginner freelancers, this feature helps establish credibility and gradually build a professional reputation.

Additional features were explored to support user productivity and platform trust, including a task management calendar, a review and rating system, and integrated payment functionality. These elements aim to create a more structured freelance experience that supports both freelancers and clients.

Early design concepts were translated into wireframes and interface prototypes to visualize how users would navigate the platform, discover projects, and manage their freelance activities.

Results & Key Takeaways

The final concept of Goolancer presents a freelance platform designed specifically around the needs of student freelancers. By focusing on accessibility, credibility building, and time management, the platform aims to reduce the barriers that students often face when entering the freelance market.

Key features of the proposed solution include a job recommendation system, professional portfolio profiles, integrated project management tools, and a feedback system that helps build trust between clients and freelancers. Together, these elements create a more supportive environment for young freelancers starting their careers.

One of the key lessons from this project is the importance of understanding the unique context of student users. Unlike professional freelancers, students must balance work with academic responsibilities, which significantly influences how they search for and manage freelance projects.
